National Democratic Congress activist Yayra Koku Deku has sent a reply to the Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante over his attack on former President Mahama regarding the latter’s comment on violence against NDC members during yesterday’s by-election.

According to Mr Yayra Koku, the Chairman of the Peace Council is himself a huge threat to the peace and stability of the country. He said Rev. Asante has consistently been selective in his comments on violence, wondering why the Peace Council Chairman did not condemn violence on Ningo Prampram MP Sam George but was quick in condemning former President John Mahama.

Rev. Asante had called on former President John Dramani Mahama to apologize to the nation for saying the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will match the governing New Patriotic Party boot-for-boot with violence in the 2020 polls.

Mr Mahama who was addressing NDC delegates in the Adaklu Constituency of the Volta Region on Thursday, 31 January 2019, said the NDC will match the NPP boot-for-boot in the 2020 elections if the government attempts to intimidate and harass NDC supporters with violence.

The former president’s comment followed a shooting incident at the La-Bawaleshie JHS polling station in the course of the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election on the same day. The NDC accused the NPP of being behind the shooting.

Mr Mahama said: “We are not going to joke in 2020, and I’m sounding a warning to the NPP – we are going to match them boot for boot…”

“I want to sound a caution that NDC has a revolutionary root and when it comes to unleashing violence, no one can beat us to that. It is just that we are mindful of this country’s democracy and that is why we must be the first to respect it.”

Response

The NDC activist Yayra Koku has however responded to the Peace Council Chairman.

“This man did not find anything wrong with the beatings of Sam Dzata George by unidentified men in police vehicle yesterday but he can comfortably tell Former President Mahama to apologise to Ghanaians for saying we will meet NPP guys boot for boot.” He said.

“That is hypocrisy in the highest order,” he added.

“Rev. Asante did not see the barbaric act yesterday as a threat but Former President Mahama’s statement is rather a threat to the nation. God help us all…” he added.
