I will end my parliamentary career in 2024 - Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu

Majority Leader and New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker for Suame constituency, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has said that he will end his parliamentary career in 2024, ABC News Ghana can report.

The rather experienced legislator says he plans on bowing out of parliament in 2024 but was quick to add though that he remains ready and willing to offer his services to the work of government.

“By God’s grace if I have the strength and if I have life I will continue but secondly I have stated it that I will end my parliamentary career in 2024, God willing”, he said.

“I leave home between 5:30 to 6:00 am and won’t come back on time. I sometimes get home around 9:30 to 10:00pm then it repeats on the following day so you don’t even see your people same way they also do not see you, if you are not in parliament, it doesn’t mean you don’t want to contribute to governance”, he added.

Mr. Kyei Mensah-Bonsu further described the decision by colleagues not to seek re-election as a great gap that will affect the legislature and suggested that there should be a consultancy unit created for them at the parliament house so they will be conveniently consulted on the governance of the country.

“It’s very sad some MPs are resigning because ordinarily, the longer a person stays, that is where he gets the experience to help the parliament and the government. Apart from we saying that Bagbin is one of the most experienced hands, he has been a parliamentarian for long, he has gotten the knowledge, if we’re talking about any issue in parliament, he can help in a special way so he saying he has resigned has created a gap in the parliament as an institution and governance of the country,” he added.

Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu went on to say that “I was speaking with the speaker of parliament sometime ago and suggested that those who have resigned, especially Fuseini, we should create a consultancy unit at Parliament and let’s put them there so they can help in the governance of the country”.
