Isaac Dogboe will face Navarrete again only at higher weights - Advisor
The legal advisor of Rising Star Africa Promotions, managers of former WBO super bantamweight champion, Isaac Dogboe, says they will only seek a third time fight with Mexican champion Emmanuel Navarrete only at the featherweight division or a higher weight class.
Ellis Quashigah says recent comments by Dogboe during an interview with a Mexican TV channel that he would love to fight Navarrete again must not be misconstrued to indicate that the Ghanaian was seeking a third clash with the WBO champion in the same weight division.
“Dogboe has moved up weight to the featherweight division, so what he meant was that he would only fight Navarrete at the featherweight division and not his previous weight,” Mr Quashigah explained to the Daily Graphic yesterday.
Dogboe, 24, suffered two back-to-back losses and his title to Emanuel Navarrete, the first coming in December last year at the Madison Square Garden as well as their rematch last May.
After his second loss, Dogboe relocated to California in the United States and now trains under the tutelage of legendary trainer Freddie Roach in a bid to revive his career.
In a recent interview at his Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, the Ghanaian said he would accept a third showdown with his conqueror at 126 pounds (featherweight) or 130 pounds (super featherweight) class.
"Look at me. I have filled up already. So we coming up 126, 130. Navarrete, I know you are a warrior. All the best in your next fight coming up and I know we are going to meet again, we are going to meet again..."
“ It will be great to face him again in the upper weights. 126, 130, right now we are here with Freddie (Roach) and Freddie wants to make sure that I am in the best weight category,” Dogboe said in the recent interview.
For Mr Quashigah, Dogboe’s concentration is on his new weight and any future showdown with Navarrete would take place at a higher division.
“Dogboe has moved up to his natural weight, which is featherweight, and If the chance comes to meet Navarrete again it would be the featherweight division and not super bantamweight, he told this paper.”
Navarrete returns to the ring on August 17 to face Francisco De Vaca, with his the WBO super bantamweight title at stake.
