President Nana Akufo-Addo has urged the security agencies to deal with any member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) who causes trouble or instigates violence in connection with the December 2020 polls.

At a meeting with some clergymen at Presidency on Wednesday, 15 January 2020, Mr Akufo-Addo said his commitment to the peace and security of the country is obvious through his actions.

“To ensure that the security agencies in our country act without partiality so that the law is applied even-handedly is the reason I passed a law against vigilantism to make sure that we can come to grips with it. And for the strictness, I have given them to the leadership of the security agencies”, he said, adding: “So far as I am concerned, crime is a crime. Crime cannot have a political colourisation”.

“I think from now on, the political leaders must insist that the security agencies act with even-handedness”, the President said, ordering: “If an NPP man causes a problem or assaults someone in public, he must be dealt with as a citizen of Ghana not as a member of the NPP”.

“It doesn’t matter that the NPP government is in power”, he noted.

The law against vigilantism was initiated by President Akufo-Addo and passed by Parliament following the gun violence that marred the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election last year.
