Jubilee legal year luncheon held in Accra

Accra, Oct. 6, GNA- The Chief Justice, Mrs Justice Georgina Theodora Wood on Saturday reiterated her call to the judiciary to change from the old ways by reacting positively to the numerous complaints against the administration of justice.

She said the bar and bench must resolve in this year of jubilee to fight relentlessly to establish a transparent and incorruptible administration of justice in Ghana.

"We owe this to the people of Ghana," she said in response to a toast proposed by the Advisor to the President, Mrs Mary Chinery-Hesse, at the jubilee legal year luncheon held in Accra. The Luncheon the first since Justice Wood assumed office comes immediately after the calling to the bar of 168 new lawyers on Friday. She said in the quest for justice, the members of the judiciary were bound to face obstacles or encounter difficulties. " I do not think we could find a better time to pledge allegiance to our motherland than now," she said

Mrs Chinery-Hesse, representing President John Agyekum Kufuor said the President was happy that democracy and the rule of law were being firmly established in Ghana and urged the judiciary to continue to play their role towards the development of the nation. "We must uphold freedom and justice and ensure that this is enjoyed by all Ghanaians," she said in a toast to the Judiciary. Nii Osah Mills, President, Ghana Bar Association, said his vision for the Bar was that members would become the voice of the voiceless within the society.

"Members of the Bar were at the forefront of independence and ever since have helped in the establishment of democracy, for which we should not relent in anyway.

"We now have the duty of ensuring that the fundamental human rights are upheld, because there cannot be development without peace and peace goes with justice," he said.
