A 21-year-old Burkinabe has been arrested for allegedly murdering his first cousin in cold blood at Oworam, a village near Asamankese in the Eastern Region.
Kumi Somi Atow is said to have used a sharpened machete to slit Somi Dapler’s throat, leaving his head hanging.
The act was to protect Atow against Dapler’s threats to teach him (Atow) a lesson after Dapler had accused Atow of being a wizard.
Atow reportedly carried out his gruesome act while the deceased was sleeping in his bedroom at dawn last Tuesday.
The suspect is reported to have fled the village after killing his cousin but he was later arrested at his hideout at Ada Korbonta, a village a few kilometres from Oworam.
According to sources, about 11 a.m. on Tuesday, the complainant, Georgina Mensah, rushed to the Asamankese Police Station to inform the police that one of her farm labourers had murdered his cousin in his bedroom at Oworam.
The farmer reportedly told the police that the two cousins were to have reported for work on her cocoa farm about 7.30 a.m. but they both failed to show up.
She, therefore, decided to visit their abode at Oworam.
Madam Mensah said when she arrived at her labourers’ house and opened Dapler’s door, she found the 22-year-old Dapler dead in his bed.
She rushed to the Asamankese Police Station to report the incident to the police, who went to the scene to pick the body.
The police later mounted an intensive search for Atow and succeeded in arresting him at Ada Korbonta.
During interrogation, Atow was said to have admitted to killing his cousin, also a Burkinabe, after a misunderstanding ensued between them.
Atow informed the police that his cousin had first accused him of being a wizard and threatened to teach him (Atow) a lesson.
In his bid to defend himself, the suspect reportedly went into his cousin’s bedroom and used a sharpened machete to cut Dapler’s throat while he was sleeping, killing him instantly.
Confirming the murder to graphic.com.gh, the Asamankese District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Yahaya Muchiraru, said Dapler’s body had been deposited at the Asamankese Government Hospital, pending autopsy.
He added that the suspect would be put before the Asamankese Magistrate Court.
