Resident engineer from the Ghana Highways Authority working on the Madina-Adenta footbridges, Shamsu Deen Isah, has assured the public some staircases will be constructed as part of the footbridges to make them more accessible.

According to him, four out of the six footbridges will get the said staircases by the time the entire project is completed.

His comments are on the back of concerns from a section of the public regarding the design of the footbridges. While some have raised concerns about the amount of time required to cross from one end of the road to the other, others have complained about the distance.

But speaking on 3FM’s Sunrise with Winston Amoah, the engineer said there is no cause for alarm as some auxiliary features will be added.

“We’ve planned to add staircases to four of the six footbridges. The addition has already started,” he told Winston on Friday.

He explained that the construction of the footbridges was informed by law, which enjoined all public facilities to be disability friendly.

“The footbridges are constructed to be disability friendly. The disability friendliness has become compulsory by law”, he said.

He added other parameters considered in the construction of the footbridges were safety and the availability of space.

Mr. Isah however named the Ritz Junction and Firestone footbridges as the two that will not get staircases, noting, the Zongo Junction and WASS footbridges are still under consideration.
