Menzgold customers arrest: Starstruck police officers’ ‘meet and greet’ session with Adebayor

It was all serious business at Tasacco Valley Wednesday, January 8, 2020, when officers from the Ghana Police Service arrived to arrest some aggrieved customers of defunct gold dealership, Menzgold, who were picketing at the house of the company’s CEO.

But the seriousness lasted until the officers spotted Togolese football star, Emmanuel Adebayor amongst the crowd.

The footballer, like other residents of the estate, came out to find out what was happening after hearing gunshots fired in the neighbourhood.

Leader of the team that was on the grounds, ACP Kwesi Ofori who was beside himself with joy, was the first to approach Adebayor who was on a bicycle and engaged him in a conversation.

After a few seconds, ACP Kwesi Fori called some other officers to also share a handshake with the footballer, a period that could be likened to a ‘meet and greet’ session.

ACP Kwesi Fori later told media men that they just had a short discussion on football.

The officers went back to complete the task for which they were deployed, after the session with Adebayor.



About 200 customers of Menzgold whose monies have been locked up in the defunct company since it was ordered to seize operations in 2017 gathered at Nana Appiah Mensah’s house from various parts of the country to demand he pays them back.

After forcing their way into the estate, the customers tried forcing their way into NAM1’s compound leading to the gunshots from the house to serve as a warning.

Angered the more by this action, some customers started hitting the gate of the house with stones whilst others rained curses on NAM1.

Officers from the Accra Region Police Command, led by the Head of Operations, ACP Kwesi Ofori, arrived shortly after this and succeeded in arresting 105 of the customers.

As at 6PM Wednesday, 20 out of the 105 had been bailed whilst the other 85, most of whom were from other regions, were yet to find sureties to secure their bail.
