Mobile money agent duped in Ashaiman

A 19-year-old mobile money agent has been duped after she accidentally sent over GH¢ 5,000.00 to a man who claimed to work with telecom giant, MTN.

Ernestina who resides at Ashaiman Lebanon received a call from the said caller claiming she had won a promotion last month.

He asked Tina to get the nearest MTN money agent for him to speak to. A naive Tina went to Anastasia who was a few minutes away from her.

Anastasia who is barely a month into the money transfer business told Adom News’ Kwame Yankah that Ernestina is her mother’s friend and least suspected both could fall into such trap.

The scammer then asked Tina to hand over the phone to the nearest agent aside Anas.

Tina then sent the phone to a Tigo cash agent, Stephanie Quansah who is over a year in the business and was smart enough to know that the caller was a scammer.

The scammer immediately hanged up only for them to realize that the money had been withdrawn by the scammer.

The case was then reported to Ashaiman Lebanon Police who detained the two.

Tina who can barely make ends meet after her husband’s death has appealed to the police to help her retrieve her money.

She together with Anastasia Sam are left with no other option than to refund the money.

Meanwhile, checks at MTN indicate that there is no such promotion but could not trace numbers used in such activities.

The police is cautioning Ghanaians over new tricks deployed by scammer.
