The Governing Council of Street2Champions, a Non-governmental organisation with the sole aim of using boxing sport to bring people out of poverty and help them change the lives in their societies visited the Volta Caucus of the Parliament of Ghana.

The Volta Caucus became one of the focal points as the maiden edition of the boxing championship is slated to take place at the Holy Trinity Health and Spa centre, Sogakope in the Volta region.

To promote the event in the region, the organizing team has sought the assistance of the caucus, enlisting the support of former world champions Joseph Agbeko and Isaac Dogboe, both of whom hail from the region. The objective is to raise awareness that the Volta region is a noteworthy hub for boxing, despite the absence of a dedicated boxing gym in the area.

A governing council member, Joseph ‘King-Kong’ Agbeko intimately shared the mission of the organisation and his passion to support boxing growth in Ghana.

“Throughout my career, I served Ghana and now that I’m retired, I believe it is my mandate to give back to the society that supported my growth and my career. This project is designed to unearth talent from where I come from, the Volta Region. Boxing is a tough sport and equally tough as the street and we want to help the youth on the streets channel their strength into boxing.”

Joseph Agbeko further stated that the project will be supported by the establishment of boxing academies, with the aim of making the sport more accessible to young people.

“We are also working towards establishing a Joseph Agbeko Fight Academy’ in the Volta Region where we will be able to produce boxers, who would also grow and come back to establish similar initiatives in the collective effort to support boxing in Ghana.”

Chairman of the Volta Parliamentary Caucus, Hon. Emmanuel Kwesi Bedzrah (Ho-West), pledged the caucus’ commitment to supporting the cause at any point. Also present in the meeting were Hon. Hottordze Alexander Roosevelt (Central Tongu), Hon. Rockson-Nelson Este Kwami Dafeamekpor (South Dayi), Hon. Peter Nortsu-Kotoe (Akatsi-North), Hon. Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey (Keta), James Klutse Avedzi (Ketu North), and Woyome Kobla Mensah (South Tongu).

Hon. Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor lauded the objective of the project by advocating for the establishment of allied boxing academies.

“To bring the boxing academies closer to the people is a motivation for those passionate about boxing. The decentralization of boxing training centres will be crucial in unearthing talents quicker and hence the adequate training and guidance.”
