On Wednesday, January 8, 2024, the 9th Parliament of Ghana approved the composition of some key committees, including the Appointments Committee.

The committee is tasked with the critical role of vetting nominees of President John Dramani Mahama for positions such as ministers, deputy ministers, Chief Justice and justices of the Supreme Court, ministers of state, Special Prosecutor, Inspector General of Police, and other positions specified under the constitution.

Relying on a ratio of 183:88 between the Majority and Minority Caucus, the House approved an eleven-member Appointments Committee made up of seven representatives from the Majority Caucus and four representatives from the Minority Caucus.

The committee will be chaired by the Member of Parliament for Akatsi South and First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor.

He will be deputized by the Member of Parliament for Ellembelle and Deputy Majority Leader, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah.

Other members of the committee from the Majority Caucus include the MP for Adaklu and Majority Chief Whip, Governs Kwame Agbodza; MP for Bawku, Mahama Ayariga; MP for Krowor, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey; MP for Daboya Mankarigu, Shaibu Mahama; and MP for Zabzugu, Alhassan Umar.

Members of the committee from the Minority Caucus are led by the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, who will serve as Ranking Member.

He is joined by other members of his caucus, including MP for Asokwa, Patricia Appiagyei (Deputy Ranking Member); MP for Nsawam Adoagyir, Frank Annoh-Dompreh; and MP for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah.

Meanwhile, expectations remain high for a yet-to-be-released list of ministerial nominees by President John Dramani Mahama, who took office on Tuesday, January 7, 2024.
