The National Democratic Congress in the North East region is demanding an apology from some government functionaries who hail from the region for failing to offer solutions to the plight of the region.

They include people vice president, Dr. Bawumia, local government minister, Hajia Alima, North East regional minister, Solomon Boar and deputy minister for Agric, Dr. Sagri Banbangi.

At a news conference addressed by the North East regional NDC communication officer, Imoro Abdul Razak, the NDC accused the afore mentioned political figures of failing to deliver on the various promises they made to their people.

Citing the plight of watermelon farmers in the region, they indicated that, Dr. Bawumia has disappointed the several watermelon farmers for giving them false promise of establishing a watermelon factory in the region.

“The farming of watermelon gained prominence and has attracted the financial institutions to be ready in giving out loans to farmers desiring to engage in commercial farming. This and many factors called for a profound statement from the vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia then vice presidential candidate to then presidential candidate now president of the republic of Ghana, Mr. Nana Akufo Addo. Dr. Bawumia on a live program on a local FM station and many on campaign platforms said the NPP as part of their flagship program, 1District 1Factory will establish a watermelon factory for the people of now North East region, which happens to be his home region” the NDC said.

They also accused Dr. Bawumia of failing to deliver on his promise of constructing dams under the 1V 1D program to enhance all year farming of watermelon. This promises, the opposition alleged convinced people in the region to vote for the NPP party.

“His elucidations were that the watermelon farmers will, under an NPP government with him as VP do an all year round watermelon farming. The early or first farming of the watermelon from April to July when the rains set in and the late or second farming through the use of dams constructed under the 1V 1D program. This profound and supposedly well thought through policy espoused by Dr. Bawumia to his people got them to vote massively for his party, the NPP”, the NDC added.

When news broke on the suffering and several loses watermelon farmers are counting in the region, the deputy minister for Agric and MP for Walewale, Dr. Sagri Banbangi according to the NDC said he had no knowledge about their plight. Something they describe as “careless”.

Meanwhile, over 12 health facilities in various communities in the North East region are either not functional or out of medical supplies.

Recently, the media reported on the shut down of the Wulugu health center due to lack of drugs. The health center serves about 20 communities in the area. Residents without the facility will have to travel to Walewale, the municipal capital or Pawlugu in the upper East region.

However, government has made Wulugu a distribution center for the zipline drone project.

The NDC in the region are therefore accusing the members of parliament for the various constituencies in the region who all double as ministers and the vice president of being responsible for their people’s suffering.
