NDC will review new curriculum that seeks to ‘hype’ J.B Danquah – Otukonor

The largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has served notice that it will review the new curriculum to be introduced next academic year which lays emphasis on J.B Danquah, one of Ghana’s founding fathers when it assumes power 2021.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has defended the introduction of the new curriculum asserts that it was developed on professional and academic contributions and assessment, not mere partisan consideration as is being speculated by mainly the opposition and its supporters.

Dr. Prince H. Armah, Acting Executive Secretary of NaCCA after the announcement of the new curriculum in April 2019, clarified that content of the new curriculum is progressive with the intention of teaching pupils the country’s history in chronological order as they move from one class to the other.

The statement issued by the NaCCA noted that “Whilst NaCCA appreciates and values public feedback on the new curriculum as an important element in helping to improve learning outcomes through a robust and responsive curriculum, we wish to state for the avoidance of doubt that our work is based mainly on academic and professional considerations.”

But the NDC which has taken strong exception to what it claims is President Akufo-Addo’s attempt to re-write the history of Ghana since he assumed power in 2017, says it will undo whatever the President has done in that regard whenever it returns to power.

Already the party in a statement released today has indicated that if it will restore 1st July [Republic Day] as a statutory holiday which has been scrapped by President Akufo-Addo if it returns to power in 2021.

“That curriculum that seeks to hype J.B Danquah will also be reviewed so that we put him in his rightful place in Ghana’s history. We can’t allow a President to assume power and because he relates J.B Danquah then seek to elevate him and rewrite Ghana’s history to favour his family, that will never be countenanced. If we allow that will do a lot of injustice to Ghana’s history. Akufo Addo and his family are not the repositories of Ghana’s history, we all know our history and will ensure that the right thing is done,” Peter Otokunor Deputy Secretary of the NDC told Okay FM.
