NGO Dupes 750 Women

THEY APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE

Seven hundred and fifty women have alleged that they have been defrauded by an NGO, Coalition and Advocacy for Women Empowerment (CAWE), to the tune of ?138,750,000. They have, accordingly, appealed to the minister for women and children?s affairs to help them to retrieve their money.

However, the country director of the NGO, Mr Kwabena Kyere Botchwey, has denied defrauding the women, claiming that they had been misinformed by their leaders. Botchwey has already appeared before an Accra circuit court charged with fraud. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in police custody for further investigations into the case. He is to reappear on March 22.

Police chief inspector Alice Takyiawa said the complainants were industrious women within the Madina/Adenta area near Accra who needed funds to make a living. In October 2004, Botchwey posed as the director of the NGO, which he claimed was operating nationwide, with its headquarters in Ho in the Volta Region. He also claimed that CAWE was out to assist people, especially deprived women in the society. As a result, Botchwey was able to collect ?130,000 each from the 700 women to process loans for them.

The prosecutor said Botchwey, after collecting the money from the women, failed to honour his promise.
