Some youth of Nsuta-Beposo in the Ashanti region who traveled to the Greater Accra Region to seek greener pastures, are returning home after five of their colleagues died in the June, 3 flood and fire disaster.
The fifth person, Kennedy Agyemang who is yet to be identified by his relatives was part of the hundreds who lost their lives in the flood disaster that also caused damage to several properties.
A mass burial ceremony was held for the four victims in the area.
The coffins of the victims, who were Carpet sellers, were arranged according to their ages with the least age being 20 years.
They were; Akwasi Duku, alias Wofa Aman, 42, Augustine Boamah,26,Joe Boakye, alias Big Joe,26 and Kwaku Tawiah, alias Abortion, 20.
The incident threw the whole town into a state of mourning, as thousands who thronged the funeral grounds were clad in either black or red attire.
Bereaved families could not hold their tears on looking at the motionless bodies, they wailed and cried throughout.
Youth expressed fear
Some youth in the area have expressed fear over the incident and vowed not to return to the Nation’s capital to do business.
They said, they were looking at other alternatives even as they returned home.
According to some of them, the living conditions in Accra were not the best, but they were considering the booming activity in the carpet business.
Government delegation
Ashanti Regional Minister, Peter Anarfi Mensah, led a Government delegation to attend the funeral.
He presented GHc 10,000 each to the bereaved families and said Government was not aware of the fifth victim.
He however pledged Government’s continuous support to the victims of the flood disaster.
“The Government has made a donation of GHc 40,000 that is GHc 10,000 to each family, I understand one of them has left behind a wife and two children and these children are the property of the state, so all must help to support them”, he added.
Mr Anarfi Mensah further called on philanthropists and benevolent institutions to support relatives of the victims.
The Sekyere Central District Assembly has also presented GH ?1000 each to the families.
Chiefs and Residents thankful
Omanhene of Nsuta-Beposo,Nana Boamaa Kwabi IV,said the sudden death of their sons had brought grief and shock to the community.
He indicated that they were making frantic efforts to identify the fifth victim.
He thanked Government for its support and called for a national prayer against the recurrence of such tragedy.
One of the heads of the family Opanin Yaw Abebrese thanked the Minster and the President after receiving the money.
In attendance was the District Chief Executive for the Sekyere Central, Akuoko Frimpong, the Member of Parliament for Nsuta-Kwaman Beposo constituency, Kwame Asafo Agyei and other heads of departments.
