The main opposition NDC has described as unfortunate, comments by elements within the NPP that its National Chairman’s letter to the President on the directive to ban vigilante groups is to divert attention from his alleged leaked tape.

According to the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Peter Boamah Otukonor, the party has always been in support of disbanding vigilante groups adding that Mr Ofosu Ampofo’s letter has nothing to do with the leaked tape.

He noted that the National Chairman’s letter became necessary as no correspondence was made to them by the NPP after a week of the President’s directive for a dialogue to break up vigilante groups within the political parties.

“This is an unfortunate diversion that we will need to ignore…because we all want an end to vigilantism and such diversion shouldn’t be entertained in a critical discussion. What we are saying is that most essentially if political parties meet we’ll just be playing around the issues and be doing blame game”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has written to the President in response to his directive to the two main political parties to break up militias affiliated to them.

The letter, addressed to President Akufo-Addo is coming at a time when the contents of a leaked audio has exposed its National Chairman on some “evil plans” being hatched against the EC Chair and the National Peace Council Chairman.

Critics say the said letter authored by the National Chairman is only a smart move to douse the flame after his viral audio tape being investigated by the Police.

Deputy General Secretary of the ruling NPP, Nana Obiri Boahen insist the intervention by Mr. Ofosu Ampofo was done in a bad faith after being embroiled in a serious security matter in that leaked tape.

“…Not a copy of the said letter was given to the New patriotic Party. Under normal circumstances an ordinarily courtesy and good manners demand that having written such a letter to the president, you give a copy to the New Patriotic Party. We were never given a copy; and then the President never even suggested that he is going to as it were, organize, facilitate it. He said the two parties.”

Leaked tape

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo on the said tape is allegedly heard telling party communicators that the NDC ahead of the 2020 elections is strategizing to launch attacks on some prominent personalities in the society including the National Peace Council Chair, Reverend Emmanuel Asante, the EC Chairperson Mrs Jean Mensah.

“For the first time, I will endorse insulting the National Peace Council Chair,” to cheers from the NDC Communicators, whilst he said the “The party will come out with a number of policy initiatives. Security and Intelligence Unit in the party will be formed and we will appoint National Coordinator, Regional, District and Constituency officers to lead these Unites as we zoom along into 2020.”

Samuel Ofosu Ampofo further stated that the Electoral Commissioner, Jean Mensah’s comments over the Ayawaso incident was unpalatable to them, and hence they will “take her to the cleaners.”

He also told his people to launch similar attacks on President Akufo-Addo who is the Commander In Chief of the Armed Forces, urging them to do all in their power to paint him violent in the face of the international community, thereby discrediting his credibility.
