Abetifi (E/R), Dec. 31, GNA - Some parents of first year second cycle students in the country have appealed to the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports to reduce second term fees since they spent only one month in school due to the two-month strike by the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT).
According to a number of parents interviewed by the Ghana News Agency at Nkawkaw, they claimed that they paid between two million and 2.5 million cedis as feeding, admission, bed, extra classes and Parents Teacher Association (PTA) fees before their wards were admitted for the three-month first term in October.
The parents said due to the NAGRAT action, their wards spent between four and six weeks at school and therefore needed a refund or a reduction in the second term fees that commends in January 2007. The parents also complained about bed fee of 200,000 cedis and a bed user fee of 5,000 cedis a term as they have already paid for the cost of the bed.
The parents therefore appealed to the sector minister to order the heads of second cycle schools to reduce the second term fees. When some of the Headmasters were contacted on the issue, they said all students should pay the normal second term fees to ensure effective running of the schools.
