The Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. Kojo Bonsu has expressed profound gratitude to Parliament for approving a Brazilian loan for the re-construction of the Kumasi Central Market. He made the commendations after visiting the market to ascertain the extent of damage after fire ragged the market last Thursday.

The fire outbreaks which occurred at the second hand cloths dealers area around “Dr Mensah” damaged stores, shops, stalls and other valuables running into several thousands of Ghana cedis.

The biggest fire outbreaks at the market in recent times, it took fire personnel and associated security institutions with a number of fire tenders hours to battle the inferno.

”I wish to thank the parliament of Ghana, especially the MPs from the Ashanti Region for approving the 295 million dollar loan from Brazil for the re-construction of the market. The first tranche of 172.5 million dollars is ready for work to commence.” He revealed.

Mayor Bonsu who empathized with the traders’ for the unfortunate plight assured them that, “after the re-development of the market, every trader who currently has a store, stall, shed or even space at the market would retain his or her place”.

Adding that, the re-construction which would be in three faces would raise the market to a modern state of the art, to the extent that it would open up the place, beautify the market and create more space for even more traders as well as jobs for many”.

The frustrated and shattered traders who had started to re-build their sheds, stores, and shops expressed disappointment at frequent promises by successive governments, fire outbreak after the other without action.

But the Mayor indicated that, “we understand your pain and share in your grieve”. You have families to feed and lives to live from here and government shares in your lose”. There is now pragmatic hope. Parliament on Friday approved the loan for the re-construction of the market. And so for once there is money ready to start the re-development of this place for you as soon as possible” he assured.
