The Ghana Police Service has been commended for the “swiftness” with which they arrested the youth who forced out the District Chief Executive of Krachi West Assembly, Douglas Osei-Nti.

The police announced last Thursday that five persons namely Mathias Banyolonso, Sarfo Sunkwa, Amos Eseikor, Tijani Shaibu and Murtala Yakubu have been arrested for causing the commotion.

They have been charged for assault by imprisonment, offensive conduct and causing unlawful damage, among others.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 3, the Centre for Local Governance Advocacy (CGLA) highly commended the police.

The Centre also expressed concerns about the action of the youth.

“The action by the youth is not only barbaric but very irresponsible and a display of gross indiscipline,” the statement signed by Executive Director Vladimir Antwi Danso said.

It said the action by the youth has not only brought local democracy and governance credentials into disrepute but also dented the image of Ghana in the comity of nations.

The youth on Tuesday, May 28 stormed the premises of the district assembly and locked up Mr Osei-Nti’s office.

They claimed his actions did not inure to the benefit of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“The CLGA is calling on political parties to heed to the concerns of their members at the grassroots using the laid-down party regulations since failure to listen to these members could create unruly and shameful situation to the party and the country as a whole.”

It asked the police to ensure that those arrested are dealt with according to law “to serve as deterrent to others who intend engaging in such irresponsible behaviours in future”.
