A local government expert and leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Kwamena Ahwoi, is expected to testify as a defence witness in a GH¢20 million defamation case against the party's chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.

Graphic Online reports that this comes after Asiedu Nketiah, who was unable to open his defence last Monday due to ill health, submitted a medical excuse duty in compliance with a court order requiring him to do so in 24 hours.

The defamation suit was filed by a former Auditor-General, Prof Dua Agyeman, over comments allegedly made by Asiedu Nketiah that the plaintiff generated fake audit reports, resulting in his dismissal by the Institute of Chartered Accounts Ghana.

As Prof Dua Agyeman's lawyers stated "The defendant's publication on Neat FM, alleging that 'Dua Agyeman concocted fake audit reports concerning some senior officers, which led to their dismissal from public service', is slanderous and defamatory of the plaintiff, made without any reasonable, just, or probable cause."

Prof. Ahwoi is testifying in his capacity as a member of the Citizens Vetting Committee (CVC), which Prof. Agyeman appeared before in 1982.

Prof. Dua Agyeman seeks declarations that the defendant's publications are slanderous and defamatory, an injunction to stop further defamatory publications, a retraction and apology, general damages, and compensatory damages of GH¢20 million.
