Protect Ghanaians in Libya and Niger – Akufo-Addo to newly appointed Ambassadors

The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has charged two newly appointed Ambassadors to the Republic of Niger and the State of Libya to do everything within their power to protect Ghanaians in their respective countries of accreditation.

The President observed that Libya and Niger are currently experiencing multiple challenges of instability that require that the entire African continent marshalls forces to help rescue them from the activities of extremists.

Addressing the Ambassadors; Dr. Samuel Adotey Anum, Ghana’s Ambassador to the State of Lybia and Mr. Jonathan Rexford Magnussen, Ghana’s Ambassador to the Republic of Niger, after administering the Oath of Allegiance, the Official Oath and Oath of Secrecy to them at the Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo noted that the two countries where they are to serve are obviously challenged but they as Ambassadors have a duty as representatives of Ghana to support all efforts to eliminate the activities of terrorists and extremists and to protect the interests of Ghanaians in the countries of their accreditation.

“You are being sent to two countries that are currently unfortunately confronted with challenges of insecurity, activities of terrorist groups and violent extremists and instability. As the representatives of a member State in good standing of the regional body, ECOWAS and the Continental body, African Union, you are to help extend the solidarity of our nation towards helping find a lasting solutions to these problems and also help protect Ghanaians who may be catch up in the crisis. I count on both of you to bring your considerable experience to bear on the resolution of these significant problems which have far reaching consequences for the peace and stability of our region and our continent” President Akufo-Addo indicated.

Response of Ambassadors

In a response after the charge of the President, Ambassador Jonathan Rexford Magnussen, on behalf of himself and his colleague registered their thanks to the President for appointing them to be Ambassadors. He indicated that they will demonstrate loyalty and commitment in promoting the good image of Ghana at the respective duty post.

“We are indeed humbled by this appointment and we wish to assure you once again that we will take due note of the demands of the job and strive to the best of our abilities and with the help of God to ensure that we rise up to the challenge that has been entrusted to us” Ambassador Magnussen said.

The ceremony was witnessed by the Chief of Staff, Madam Akosua Frema Osei Opare, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Secretary to the President, Nana Badiatuo Asante, official of the Presidency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and family members of the newly appointed Ambassadors.
