Robbers attack 2 firms

By Mary Mensah

ARMED robbers numbering about 18 attacked the offices of the Accra North District Electricity Company and the Unipetrol Fuel Station at Legon near Accra, a few hours apart in the early hours of last Thursday. Two security men at the Electricity Company office ? Andrews Akwetey and Amadu Anieku ? were shot by the robbers and are on admission at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra whilst six others who sustained minor injuries have been treated and discharged. The robbers managed to break into safes at the two places and made away with millions of cedis in cheques and cash.

According to Mr. John Mensah, a securityman at the electricity office, the armed robbers wielding sophisticated rifles and other dangerous implements attacked the office at about 12:40 a.m. and rounded up the eight men who were on duty at the time and tied them up. He said they removed the uniforms of the two security men who were stationed at the gate and two of the armed robbers put them on and positioned themselves at the gate to prevent anybody from intruding. He said the leader of the robbers who was holding two guns ordered the two security men to lead them to the cashier?s office after which they ordered the security men into the washroom, bound them tightly and ransacked the offices of the district manager and the cashier.

The robbers made away with ?5.4 million cash and ?1.9 million in cheques. After the operation they scaled the wall and disappeared. One of the security men managed to remove his ropes and untied the others who rushed to the Legon police and made a report.

According to Mr. Aboagye Mensah, Station Manager of Unipetrol, the robbers numbering about 10 arrived at the station at about 2:15 am and overpowered two security men on duty and seized their truncheons. He said the five workers on duty were severely assaulted and they ordered the shift captain who was holding the key to the safe, to open it or else he would be killed. After taking all the money in the safe, they left without touching any of the lubricants at the shop. He said a report has been made to the Legon police. A source at the Legon police said the modus operandus of the armed robbers is similar to another armed robbery attack at the Accra Training College at Madina in the early hours of Wednesday which means they are the same group.

He said no arrests have been made but investigations are underway.
