Parts of the Accra-Winneba Highway along the Gomoa Okyereko stretch reportedly collapsed on Thursday, June 6, 2024, after the diversion of the nearby River Ayensu by a contractor.

The extent of the damage caused to the road is now more visible after the water from the river, which overtook the road, receded.

Pictures from the scene of the incident shared by Asaase Radio show a huge chunk of the highway completely cut off.

Not only were parts of the road cut off, but the sand and gravel under some sections had been washed away, leaving the top part of the road hanging.

Some personnel of the Ghana Police Service and other officials could be seen at the scene of the incident.

Earlier, GhanaWeb reported that parts of the Accra-Winneba Highway had been left impassable after portions of the road collapsed.

Viral visuals of the incident sighted by GhanaWeb showed part of the highway completely washed off.

A video shared by Accra-based Metro TV showed the road overtaken by water from the river.

The vehicles on the road were using one side, seeing that the other was completely washed away.

Some men could be seen directing traffic as vehicles, including gas tankers, dangerously drove through the flooded road.

Reports indicated that the water from the river also flooded farmlands and parts of the Gomoa Okyereko community.
