Sex allegations against security persons on peacekeeping not new - Ex- police chief

A retired Police Inspector, Micheal Asamoah, has described the reported sex scandal involving Ghanaian peacekeepers in Sudan as embarrassing.

According to him, although sex scandal involving police personnel on peacekeeping are not new, the act needs to be discouraged.

The U.N. peacekeeping mission in South Sudan has recalled a Ghanaian police unit working at one of its protection camps while it investigates allegations that some of them were involved in sexual abuse, it said on Saturday.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan said it had asked the 46-member unit to return to the capital Juba from its Protection of Civilians site in Wau, northwest of Juba, after an investigation was launched into a complaint that members of the unit were having sexual relations with women living at the camp.

In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Inspector Micheal Asamaoh explained that the current scandal has just been overblown due to the number of persons involved.

According to him, security persons on peacekeeping are deprived of their social lives and that some personnel take undue advantage of the local indigenes and abuse them.

“Most of the time, there is indiscipline at the peacekeeping camps. At the camps, there are no leaders hence most of the people who cannot control themselves end up in a situation like this”, he added.
