Stop putting pressure on drivers to speed – IGP advises passengers ahead of festive season

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), James Oppong Boanuh, has assured Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians resident in Ghana that concrete and pragmatic measures have been put in place to ensure their safety and the safety of their property this festive season, cautioning especially passengers to desist from piling pressure on drivers to speed up since this can lead to accidents.

“Passengers travelling to various destinations should avoid putting pressure on drivers to speed in order to get to their destination early,” his statement on Safety and Security during the Yuletide presented to the Graphic Communications Group Limited read in part.

He also advised drivers, motor riders and other road users to adhere to all Road Traffic Regulations and remain cautious so as to avoid accidents.

The IGP revealed that enough personnel have been deployed to ensure peace and order during this yuletide, especially in crime-prone areas.

“Over 15,000 Police personnel both in uniform and plain clothe, have been deployed to various vantage points, particularly crime-prone areas to maintain law and order. We have intensified day and night patrols, increased community engagements and sensitization on security matters, deployed some technological devices to enhance information gathering, stepped-up traffic management, intelligence-led operations, snap checks and highway patrol,” he disclosed.

He, however, reminded all that whatever measures that are put in place will amount to nothing if the public does not cooperate and collaborate with the police service.

“These interventions can only be effective if the Police receive the needed support from the general public, bearing in mind that effective crime prevention and detection is anchored on shared responsibility between the Police and the public it serves. The Police can only be successful in this collective effort if it receives reliable information from the general public,” he insisted, assuring all and sundry that the police are intent and prepared for an incident-free festive season.

“I wish to assure Ghanaians and all foreign nationals in Ghana that the Police is committed to ensure that you celebrate the Yuletide without experiencing any major security drawbacks.” He assured.
