It’s an atmosphere filled with excitement and anticipation; a ‘big deal’ for residents of the Northern Region to have, for the first time in the history of Ghana, the National Independence celebrations taking place in the capital; Tamale.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, during his 3rd State of the Nations Address, announced that the 62nd independence celebrations will be held in Tamale to mark the historic peace process achieved in Dagbon after years of tension.

In light of that, the annual event which is held in the capital of Accra was sent to the Northern Regional Capital.

Residents who obviously are thrilled about the decision have thronged the Aliu Mahama stadium to participate and witness the event.

Chiefs, leaders and residents alike have flooded the stadium in the ceremonial smock to mark the day. Students and national security bodies are also present for the usual march pass on the day.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo arrived in Tamale Tuesday ahead of the event. Former Presidents, Members of the diplomatic communities and Ministers of State, most of which are dressed in smock are also present to grace the occasion.

This year’s celebrations themed ‘Celebrating Peace and Unity’ seeks to among other things celebrate the peace roadmap attained by the Dagbon area.
