Terrific traffic in town to lessen drastically - MTTD assures Ghanaians ahead of yuletide

Head of Education, Research, and Training at the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Alex Obeng has indicated that traffic wardens are poised to go the extra mile to get “morning and evening rush hours…effectively covered”.

In an interview with GhanaWeb, Mr Alex Obeng noted that this strategy is part of the reactive ways to lessen the terrific traffic in town especially during mornings and evenings, therefore, what is expected of Ghanaians is to respect traffic regulators’ instructions to help in the free flow of movement.

He further announced that his men will in certain instances override the amber light, popularly known as the green light to allow more traffic towards the cities.

Recalcitrant road offenders who engage in unlawful overtaking, excessive speeding, drunk-drinking among other flouting of rules and regulations will be apprehended by the officers on duty and will be severely punished for their actions to serve as a deterrent to others, he stressed.

Superintendent Obeng explained that the newly launched ‘Operation Father Christmas’ which has 15,000 policemen to work this festive season also aims at “beefing up the strength and capacity of road Motor Traffic and Transport Department so that we will be able to deploy at all strategic locations at accident prone areas and at junctions to direct and control traffic”.

‘Operation Father Christmas’, a codename for the service’s activities to combat crime during the festive season, specifically at the markets, churches, beaches among other 'hotspots'.

It is also to ensure that the police are readily on hand to protect lives and properties.

He also pleaded with both motorists and commuters to appreciate the efforts of traffic wardens by complying to their directions during this yuletide.
