Newly appointed Sports Minister, Nii Lantey Vanderpuije has bemoaned sports facilities in the Western region, describing them as not befitting the status of such a region.

He was surprised at the facilities he saw on the ground and charged those in charge to be up to the tasked assigned them.

The Western region he noted, has produced some of Ghana’s best ever sports men and women and, therefore, deserves better in terms of sports facilities than presently on the ground.

Nii Lantey Vanderpuije made this assertion during a working visit to the region to identify himself with the challenges there and plans for the future.

He was particularly saddened by the nature of the pitch at the Gyandu Park, Sekondi and other stadia facilities at that venue which he described as below standard.

The Sports Minister also visited all the training pitches which were constructed ahead of the AFCON 2008 event and which have been left to develop into a rather poor state.

“The maintenance culture of our people have not been good, and, this must change,” he told Kumasi based radio Station, Nhyira FM after his visit.

Mr Vanderpuije promised that his outfit would in the immediate future, be embarking on a project to get sports facilities at “our various stadia into good condition to help attract and develop more talents for the nation.
