UPSA tops the world in Global Business Higher Education Quality

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has topped a global assessment of higher education institutions around the world for the 2013/2014 academic year.

The assessment is part of the requirements of the membership of the highly reputed Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programmes (ACBSP), a US-based global body that accredits business related programmes at the bachelors, masters, and doctorate degree levels worldwide.

A statement issued by Mrs. Vera Akumiah, UPSA Deputy Director, Public Affairs and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday said as a member of the ACBSP, UPSA students were required to take part in a global inbound as fresh students and outbound as graduating students examination to assess their knowledge levels and compare them with their counterparts worldwide.

It said the first batch of 299 final year graduate and 1,905 final year undergraduate students sat for the first outbound examinations between May and July 2014.

“The results revealed that on average, UPSA students outperformed their counterparts in the world with an average score of 51.93 per cent compared with 51.37 per cent for business schools within the USA, and 46.52 per cent for schools outside the USA and overall ACBSP average score of 51.29 per cent,” the statement said.

According to the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Joshua Alabi, “the revelation based on the comparison by ACBSP was amazing, because “the retained knowledge of UPSA graduates was found to be slightly higher than that for graduates across the globe.”

“This is enough evidence that the University’s dream of becoming a world-class higher education provider in business programmes is on course”, Prof. Alabi said.

He added that the structures of the university’s undergraduate and graduate programmes have also been redesigned in conformity with both the ACBSP and global quality standards, based on best practices.

“The implementation of the newly structured programmes has started in earnest, with our fresh students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels this academic year; 2014/2015,” Prof. Alabi stated.

The statement observed that the UPSA believed its membership of the ACBSP would help enhance the quality of education provided to its most important stakeholders, students and also position the university in the ranks of top global business education institutions.
