University of Ghana students irritated as religious groups, individuals return to Sarbah Field with loud prayers

Some students residing in halls close to the Sarbah Field of the University of Ghana are angry over the return of religious individuals and groups to use the field for religious activities.

From about 6:00 pm daily, these religious persons start thronging to the field to hold prayer meetings.

The activity usually extends deep into the dawn of the next day.

The students who reside around the Sarbah Field are even more worried as the activities of these individuals and groups results in the creation of a noisy environment, denying them their ‘peace of mind’.

“What is happening has been happening since. I wonder if there are any rules and regulations about the use of the Sarbah Field. With the noise they produce, we cannot concentrate when we are learning in the evening. Even when you decide to sleep, the noise does not allow you,” Gifty Addae, one of the affected students told UniversNews

Some students who spoke to UniversNews on the matter want University authorities to deal with culprits.

Last year, the Chaplaincy Board announced the closure of the field for Christian religious activities until further notice.

According to the Board, the closure was to allow for some renovation works to be undertaken.

They advised all groups or persons who hold religious meetings on the field to relocate their activities to the Athletic Oval.

The return of these individuals and groups contravenes the University’s regulation for Junior Members.

According to the regulation, it is an offence for a Junior Member to “make undue noise within the University precincts. In particular, the hours between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am are to be regarded as hours of quiet, provided that this rule shall not apply where permission to organize a function has been granted by the Head of Hall or Dean of Students”
