The Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, could not hide his disappointment over recent comments made by his main rival in the pending 2024 presidential elections, former President John Dramani Mahama, who also doubles as the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking at a mini rally in the Okaikwei North constituency on September 15, 2024, Mahama criticised the clergy, traditional leaders, and Civil Society Organizations for not holding the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government, which he described as a useless government, accountable for its poor governance.
He questioned why traditional leaders fail to address the economic hardships and instead offer praise to the NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
“We are all living in this country. We have pastors, imams, chiefs, and Civil Society Organizations here, yet they only seem to have an issue when the NDC complains. We must all come together and unite to hold the government accountable and speak out against the ongoing mismanagement.
“However, when NPP members visit traditional leaders and pastors, the only response they receive is praise, endorsements, and further blessings for their supposed good work, rather than being told the truth about their poor governance. You want to win power with your useless government?” he asked.
Reacting to this at a campaign event at Amasaman, in the Greater Accra Region, on September 16, 2024, Vice President Bawumia slammed the former president for his criticism of chiefs and pastors.
He said that Mahama has resorted to insults because he knows he is going to lose the December 7, 2024, presidential elections.
The NPP flagbearer appeared even angrier over the former president’s description of the current government as ‘useless’.
"We, politicians, must have some decency in the language we speak. This election is not about insults. It is about ideas. You only insult people when you do not have ideas. But if you have ideas, you present your ideas.
"We have ideas and we have bold solutions to problems. You say we are a foolish government but we have created more jobs than your government. We have built more roads than your government. We have built more interchanges than your government. We have built more bridges than your government.
"We have built more factories than your government. We have built more schools than your government. We have built more hospitals than your government. We have built more courthouses than your government. We have built more sanitation facilities than your government. We have built more AstroTurfs than your government. We have built more sports facilities than your government.
"We have built more fibre optic cables than your government. Every sector of the economy that you can mention, we have done better than you. And you say we are a foolish government?” an animated Bawumia asked.
