A group of officials from the Ghana Prisons Service and some inmates they were transporting besieged Ejura, a community in the Ashanti Region, brutalizing civilians in the community.

The prisons officers attacked a man who allegedly challenged them, and were joined by the inmates they were transporting from Nkwanta to Ejura, erupting into mayhem.

A video from the scene of the incident, shared by Asaase Radio on X on June 5, 2024, showed a prison officer initially attacking a man in a white shirt.

The officer landed two heavy punches to the face of the man, which led to him falling to the ground.

The inmates then joined in, hitting the victim with all manner of weapons, including sticks and huge plywood.

A family relation of the victim, who spoke to Asaase Radio about the incident, indicated that it happened on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

She said that the incident occurred after the officer nearly hit the victim, Agyekum, with the tricycle he was using to transport the inmates.

She said that Agyekum criticized the officer for the way he was driving, which made him unhappy.

The prison officer then began to insult Agyekum, and when he replied, the officer got off the tricycle and started attacking the victim with the support of the inmates.

She added that the victim was badly injured and was taken to the hospital after a police report was filed.
