West Mamprusi farmers supported to increase food production

Walewale (NR), May 26, GNA - Mr. Sulley Abudu Zakaria, West Mamprusi District Chief Executive (DCE), has presented six tractors to farmers in the area on high purchase to help them to increase food production towards poverty reduction.

Four water pumps had also been distributed to other farmers under the same terms to cultivate some 200 hectares of Maize in the Kparipiri and Suhuluya areas, under dry season farming. Mr. Zakaria, who made the presentation in Walewale on Tuesday, named Selinvoya, Boamasa, Mashio, Bulbiya, Zua and Nasia as the beneficiary communities.

He said that officials of the District office of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture had registered some 3,098 farmers for consideration for assistance to enable them to cultivate food crop while about 450 farmers in eight communities would be assisted with seeds and tractor services to cultivate "jatropha" plant.

Mr. Zakaria appealed to the farmers to make judicious use of the tractors and the pumping machines to increase food production to ensure that Government's effort at fighting poverty through agriculture was achieved. He gave the assurance that Government would do everything possible to provide the people with their developmental needs. Mr. Zakaria appealed to the people to ensure peace and security and support Government to carry out its "Better Ghana" agenda. He presented relief items for distribution to 152 persons whose houses were burnt in Nakpaya early last month and appealed to the people to remain calm since the matter was being investigated. The items included maize, cow pea, millet, rice, plastic buckets, mats, T-shirts and roofing sheets.
