The Minister for Gender, Children and social protection, Honourable Nana Oye Lithur, has said that the contribution of women to the socio-economic and the infrastructural development to the Nation cannot be over emphasized and that all quest should be made to give them a befitting status in the society.
“Women would be represented at all level of national development” She Assured. Nana Oye, said as a government they would engage the Traditional Rulers of the three Northern Regions, to eliminate some archaic traditional Practices that tends to hinder on the development of women in Ghana.
The Minister for Gender and social protection made these remarks during an induction ceremony for the beneficiary of Camfed Senior High Schools (SHS) leavers in the Northern Region, on Wednesday, in Nyankpala, in the Northern Region, under the theme, “Time to celebrate Time to look into the future.” Nana Oye appealed to the traditional authorities to help abolish some of the harmful cultural practices in order to protect the girl child and the vulnerable women in the society. She urged them to look for sustainable ventures in their pursuit instead of going for “kayaye” in the cities.
She gave the assurance that as a government it would support in whatever ways it could such that they would reach the pinnacle of their future dreams.
On his part The Deputy Northern Regional Minister, Hon Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, expressed his gratitude to Camfed for its continuous contribution towards girls’ education and women’s empowerment in the Country, stressing that Dr. James Kwegyir Aggrey of blessed memory once asserted that; “if you educate a man, you educate an individual but if you educate a woman, you educate the whole nation,” he would prefer to add that it will develop women in the international community of human kind.
He urged the granduands to be relentless in their efforts at achieving high success in life; He however, admonished them to be role models in their respective communities despite the challenges in the Region.
Mrs. Dolores Dickson, Executive Director of Camfed Ghana said the vision of Camfed is that every child is protected, respected and valued and grows to become responsible adults for the Country. Meanwhile, Camfed (Campaign for Female Education) is a non-Governmental Organisation that supports girl’s education and young women to become empowered so that they become agents of change in their communities. In all 1,317 were drawn from sixteen (16) districts in the Northern Region.
Earlier, Nana Oye called on the Deputy Northern Regional Minister, A.B.A.Fuseini, at Northern Coordinating Regional Council (NRCC), where she espoused similar sentiments and later call on the chief of Nyanpkala, Naa Yakubu Nindoo, which she emphasized that the traditional rulers are critical to her ministry Mandate, saying that they intend to collaborate with them in order to promote the welfare of women in Ghana.
On his part Naa Yakubu Nindoo, used the rare opportunity to appeal for an accommodation bungalow for the nursing staff within the Nyankpala enclave.
