Project Coordinator for the Mental Health Society of Ghana, Abena Korkor has called on all workers of psychiatric hospitals to ensure mental health patients are given top quality healthcare.

According to her, the patients who are sometimes not treated right deserve to be able to move freely in a safe space.

“When they have episodes, you are not supposed to restrain the person,” she said.

Abena Korkor also bemoaned the practice of chaining mental health patients in the country urging mental health professionals to refer to the health programme by the World Health Organization for guidance in administering their services.

“Some of them are chained, all those things are happening in Ghana and those practices have to stop.”

“There’s this new programme that has been introduced by WHO; ‘Quality rights’, where they talk about the best way of giving quality health to a person with mental health problems,” she added.

Today, 10th October marks the World Mental Health Day; a day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma
