really fine work Doctor. I am just a lay person but I expressed some of the same sentiments when the talk of going nuclear began to brew. As you and others have already said, managing the waste in the capital alone has been such a headache and challenge for us why on earth would we want to go nuclear. how our government officials can be that brain dead is defies understanding. In any case how do we make this a national debate to weigh the pros and cons of it and then possible get the powers that be to back off this foolish idea?

OUR COMMENT: Precisely! There is absolutely no point to this highfalutin quest for a prize all the people cannot sustainable control, or profit from. There is absolutely no way to faithfully justify this mad quest!
First, fix the basics in earnest, we must say!

God bless you Dr. Ofori Quaah. Now its up to Ghanaians to use these examples base on your active examples and knowldge base on your tecnical know how to stop these debate from going on in Ghana.
Now it is known that Ghanians are very hungry for Power, and this I believe should not encourage us to invite the devil(Nuclar Power for electricity) among our mix.
there are so many ways of getting this means of power supply in Ghana so why should we go the inferior way? current advancement and morden technology has opened up to a clearn and relable means of Power , electricity so why do we keep thinking of Nuclar?
Look Ghanaa is not only for the few that are beating, and keep beating the drums of Nuclar power, it is for we living now and those who has not even been born yet so let us utilze our God giving brain to stop these nonesence at all times. Also its up to our representatives in parliament to stop all these nonesence forms of debate even before it erupts there in the house.
we should not even be thing of the nuclar supply of elecrticity, but rither its side effects radiation and even where to keep our nuclar waste 10yrs. after we have already put them in place, It is now a big problem for these advance countries using nuclar where to store the numerous waste that they have already aquire from it. yet they have alrady enjoyed the benefits of the Power obtained from that. why would we like to commet our little dear loving country into such delemar?
Nuclar is not good for our country and as that matter to any Afican counrty. let us continually keep it off the Table. Let the wise listen and let the fools keep on beating the drums for ever dreaming of something that would never work.
Thank you professor Dr. Quaah, and God give you long life.

Solar is there and the raw material, the sun, is free and abundant everywhere in the country. Above all going for something like solar and wind will lead to the creation of many jobs.

This said, I think it is an excellent article. Because it details the necessary technical considerations that confirms my argument that nuclear energy is ill-advised in Ghana (ps refer to my recent article on nuclear energy in Ghana).
I will be glad if you can furnished a direct contact between the author of the technical part of this article and myself. I suspect it is Dr. Dr A. Ofori Quaah?

I beg to differ. In the first place, nuclear energy has gone a long way to becoming safe. It has so many advantages over hydro which causes disastrous environmental problems when spillage occurs, not forgetting inundation of several tracts of arable lands and the displacement of people. Damming also destroys the ecosystem by killing off certain fish species and wildlife when lands are lost to inundation. After all what have we done with the largest man made lake in terms of adding economic value to it? The dams also cut off shipping access to the sea and hinders eco-tourism. Ghana is a small country and we cannot afford to lose any more lands to water inundation. Let's save our rivers. Nuclear plant if well maintained will be very safe and i think our nuclear scientists are ready for that challenge. Let's have a bit of faith in them. It is more efficient than hydro which depends on the rains and weather. Siting it is not a problem. The vast sparsely populated savannah belt is an ideal place to site it. One nuclear plant will be sufficient to solve our electricity needs and for export as well. It is better than all these gas plants and the proposed coal plant by Asogli with their high level carbon footprint. The emphasis should be on safe and clean energy. Nuclear in combination with solar and wind and the already existing power sources(the 2 hydro and gas plants) will be more than adequate to shoot us into the industrialized age. Let's give nuclear a chance.

Mr. Agyin, please note that the Russian Nuclear plants that are destined for Ghana are not safe. Remember Chenobly? Either you get the latest state-of the art plant from the USA or forget the whole stuff. Frankly, I dont believe Minister Buah is serious about acquiring a nuclear plant; I believe it is for propaganda to indicate that Mahama's admnistration is determined to solve our current energy crisis. The licensing alone for the proposed nuclear plant will not happen during the regime of this admnistration, and I cannot phantom that a new administration by NPP or PPP or whoever will continue with such licensing. The whole proposition does not make sense for Ghana, let alone the West African region!!!

What are we doing about solar power which is abundant in our country not, does need to be dug from the bottom of the sea, will not require local residents to be deprived of their homes with no negative enviromental effects? If the American space projects can be run on solar power then the technology exists to run Ghana on the same power source. We don't have to go and collect the sun it comes to us free. We must not be fooled by the unlucky people who do not have this God given gift and are hell bent on sending the whole world looking for oil or nuclear power with the high capital costs and the need for us to pay through the nose for it all!!
