Gerald Asamoah
An emotional Gerard Asamoah was reduced to tears on stage at his farewell event at the Veltins Arena in Germany on Saturday.
The 37-year-old who led the his Schalke All-Stars team to beat a selected side 5-4 was handed a befitting send-off by his former Club as he bid farewell before a 60,000 crowd at the Veltins Arena.
Asamoah arrived to the pitch in dramatic fashion dropping from the skies waving the French flag in honour of the departed souls in the terrorist attacks a day before in Paris.
The striker made his debut for Germany in 2001 against Slovakia, making him the first African-born black player to ever play for the side.
The ex-Hannover and St. Pauli scored 44 goals in 279 appearance for Schalke 04.
He also made 43 appearances for Germany and represented the European country at the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups.
Asamoah was keen on playing for the Black Stars in the late 1990s but was neglected by coach Guiseppe Dossena when he arrived in the country.
With no interest in his services, Asamoah turned his attention to the German national team and became the first blackman to play for the European country with some successes.
Asamoah is married and has two children, twins Jada and Jaden, both born on 26 February 2007.
