Ghana's team cannot be tagged as failure because if you look at the countries winning the medals most of them are members of G20. This means their economy is good and have the ability to build good facilities to train the sports men and women. They get good sponsorship from big companies in their countries. Great Britain alone sent over 300 people compared to 11 from Ghana. So well done to the Ghanaian athletes.

Mike, you said most of the countries winning medals are G20 members. That is a argument of convenience. Why didn't you say all of the medals are going to the G20 countries? You can't because there are a lot of non-G20 countries winning medals. Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, Cuba, Uzbekistan, Czech Republic and many more non-G20 have won medals. India and Saudi Arabia are G20 countries but haven't won a single medal. Excellence in anything, sports especially, depends how resources are allocated to develop talent. A country of 25 million people definitely has talent. The problem is how Ghana prioritize and allocate resources. Our Olympic team haven't achieved anything for us to congratulate them.

That's not strictly true. Jamaica is hardly a G20 country. Smaller nation, smaller economy and smaller population than Ghana. Yet they dominate in track and field every time. It's not to do with money alone. It's to do with how the Federations run and are managed. In Ghana, the Presidents hide behind the rules that protects them from Government interference, yet they want government money. And by hiding behind this rule they make themselves dictators uncaccountable to any checks and balances and transparency for decisions they make. Their judgement is therefore based on things like how they benefit not how the sport benefits or the individual athletes. That's the problem. Not money necessary.

These old folks have primitive ideas that are retrogressing and must be halted. These good for nothing "manso" GAA leaders have wasted lots of Ghanaian talents. Best example is Martha Bissau who is just destroyed by these good for nothing folks.
I have friends who have worked for these leaders before and when they tell you their stories, you will wish to abolish the GAA. I am sick to my stomach when i hear these stories and indeed it's sad.

Their attitudes wreak havoc as often they are dictators and frightened to lose their power, then pander to sychophants and are vain and looking for money. That's the difference. After all Ghana was a force to reckon with in those days when we had better organisation and administration. Prof Doudo, Joshua Owusu, Alice Anum and even as late as "yesterday" Ignisious Gaisah trained under somewhat favourable conditions as compared to what is going on now. Was it not out frustration that Ignisious Gaisah naturalized to jump for the Netherlands?
I even doubt your position that Kenya Athletics is well managed. If it were so Kenya would not have been leading the pack in ATHLETE LABOUR MIGRATION. @ VILLAGER I agree JK I find Saint's comments really rude. He calls everyone an idiot and is aggressive. If you can't get your point across politely, no one wants to listen to you even if you are right. As for Kenya being well managed, I believed the Kenyan Athletic Federation President was suspended a few months ago by the Minister of Sports. SO in that sense, I guess they are better managed because at least when they mess up and cause problems, as Federation presidents often do particularly in certain zones, at least the Government has enough sense to step in and suspend the Federation president. That is sthe sort of accountable action Ghana Government should be brave enough to take. Which they will only take if they believe that sports in Ghana can bring a lot of success and pr for the country, be good for youth and for nation building and BRING IN REVENUE. Until the government puts a value on it nothing will happen. Then when they put a value on it, they can take more of an active interest in the way the federations are being run at present. of course the rules stipulate that you can't have government interference in a sports federation, but the government does have a right to suspend a president of a federation if he (it's always a he in Africa), is doing something wrong because they are representing the flag and the national interest afterall and they are receiving funding from the government. The Federations can't continue like this. Have their cake and eat it too!!

If we want to succeed in sports we have to first tackle the administration problem. The rules that govern the way the Federations are run is this. They can do what they want because they are protected by the International Federation. Same with the Olympic committee This means that the president of the federation has complete protection and impunity. Now with that kind of protection what do you think is going to happen? The system is vulnerable to corruption and bad decision making and management that can't be corrected. The only thing that the Government can do is to withold funds. In other words say to the Federations we will not fund you until you change your system, change your president and create statues that are clear and transparent. Present a plan and a programme. In other words make it a more professional outfit. Sports is big business and any country that is doing well tends to have a proper strategy. In Ghana, we have a bunch of federations for different sports that are run by people who actually don't know anything half the time about the sport they are supposed to be representing. The Presidents have sort of inherited the mantle maybe 10 15 years ago and they just tick along and collect money where they can. Fly around the world and show off.If you talk to any of them for more than 10 minutes, and you actually know something about sports management, you can see right through their weaknesses and then understand why there is no progress. If the government gives money to these federations they are just making it worse. It's like giving money to a gambler, he's just going to gamble more!

What is Ghana's 'speciality'. Kenyans win long distance because historically it was not something other nations focussed on and the locals in East africa were running at high altitude so when they started competing at Olympics etc they did well and the Government thought this was something they could excel at so they pursued it. Now it's become their 'speciality' and other foreigners go there to train for their long distance. Mo Farah did 3 months training in Ethiopia for the Rio Olympics for instance. So each country has special unique environment and circumstances and can build on it with very little resources it brings success and success brings revenue. Success brings success. It is not magic! It just requires logical analysis, and an understanding of sports and athlete management. Ghana can't succeed in Swimming for instance at Olympic level by 2020. What it can do, is develop these two swimmers they sent out to Rio to train for African Championships this year. If they do well, then build on that for next African Championships. If that goes well then prepare them for the African Games. It's step by step. At the same time, find/recruit an 8 or 9 year old that has the potential to be developed for Olympics 2024.Time and age is the factor in swimmers' success.

Precisely. A huge Ghana contingent went to African Games so many 'officials'. they partied and distracted the athletes. They didn't even have a programme or schedule like other nations did. It was chaos. There is time to get ready for the next African Games but there has to be a professional outside sports management company to come in and advise and create a plan and specific individuals to develop. Not willy nilly give us more money and build us this that and the other thing. Bricks and mortar don't make champions. Going abroad doesn't make champions. It's not magic. There is a clear formula for success. Ghana has talent, and it has certainly provided enough funding in the past. The trouble is the funding gets sucked up and used in the wrong way. The Federation presidents are the ones to blame. Not the talent.

What's the plan of the Ghana Athletics Association? None. Elsewhere, serious nations and results oriented athletics/sports federations start earnest preparations towards major international competitions like the Olympics well ahead of time, about 4 - 8 years before the actual event. Not so in Ghana where they stay dormant until 3 months before a major event like the Olympics. Consistency and long term preparation are both alien and irritating norms to Ghanaian officials. Most nations whom we've long considered as minnows in Africa sports have made significant strides and have actually overtaken us because for several years our government and sports officials have been sleeping on the job and only pretend to be doing something when it's already too late. It takes much more than wishful thinking to be successful in anything that requires talent, muscle power, speed, consistency and the power of positive thinking to be hugely successful. We fail in most aspects of life because we lack the vision and the plan to make significant and long lasting impact in every field of human endeavor. Most of the time the minds of our so-called leaders are fixated on insignificant and trivial matters that have nothing to do with national development and growth.

Now that this issue has become a hot topic for the nation, the Government should take the opportunity and say, 'you know what, we are going to clean this up. We are going to look into how the Federations are run, and ask them for their agendas, strategy and goals. We are not going to provide any further funding to ANY federation until they can come clean with what their plan is and if it makes sense (they should hire an outside firm of sports managers that have nothing to do with any of the federations and are from outside the country, and professional, with no axe to grind), to evaluate and report on each federation and make recommendations. If the federations take the recommendations on board and implement them then they can apply for governmet funding. In other words, we have to take the power back from these individuals who have created fiefdoms, and empires for themselves to the detriment of sports and athletes and therefore the country.

Olympics starts from childhood. Good care and proper nutrition of children contribute a lot to future performance. Most of the athletes from the advanced countries are college students. Note, I am note talking of high school students. Google up USC college for instance and see how many medals their students have won at the Olympics since its inception. USC-affiliated athletes won 21 medals — nine golds, five silvers and seven bronzes — at the just-concluded 2016 Rio Olympics, keeping the school as the leader among U.S. universities for most all-time medals and gold medals and continuing its streak of having won a gold medal at every Summer Olympics since 1912.
