NRSC is beginning a nationwide towing program in July
The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) is beginning a nationwide towing program in July which is to ensure that all vehicles that breakdown on highways within and outside major towns are cleared off the roads.
The exercise which is being conducted in collaboration with a private company Road Safety Management Company Limited is to reduce the risk of road users running into stationary vehicles; a trend which is responsible for over 20% of all road accidents in the country.
The program which will also involve clearing fallen trees, wrongfully parked vehicles and obstacles on high ways is to ensure free flow of traffic.
Speaking to Ultimate News on the sidelines of a stakeholder forum held ahead of the program, Head of programs and planning at the National Road Safety Commission, David Osafo Adonteng indicated that the legislation and modalities needed to kick start the program had all been secured for the program to set sail.
He however added that drivers will be required to pay a road safety fee alongside their road worthy certification fees to enjoy this service.
“According to the arrangement, Motor bike owners will pay ten cedis (GHc10 cedis) for the whole year, Non commercial cars twenty cedis (GHc20), Taxis will pay forty cedis (GHc40) in two installments as they pay their road worthy fees twice a year.”
“Mini commercial buses – will be required to pay forty cedis GHc40 twice a year totaling eighty cedis (GHc80) while renewing their road worthy certificates. Trucks will pay between 40 and 100 cedis twice a year based on their tonnage while renewing their road worthy certificates.”
Foreign vehicles that are not required to visit the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority for road worthy certification will be charged the same fees at the borders of entry.
MODALITIES
The service provider will have centers across the country where towing vehicles will be stationed.
