The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta has vowed to remain on site, during the Christmas season, if repair works on the Bupei and Yapei bridges are not completed on schedule.

This follows his announcement in parliament that the ongoing works will span a period of four weeks at a cost of GHS 4 million, when he appeared on the floor of the House to deliver a statement on the closure of the two bridges.

Major works on the two bridges are expected to be fully completed by end of the first quarter of 2018, according to him.

As an interim measure, a number of ferries have been dispatched to the area to reduce the challenges commuters are going through as a result of the closure of the two bridges.

An alternative bridge, he added, will be constructed at Daboya to serve as a bye-pass going forward.

Meanwhile, the closure of the bridge has brought untold hardships to commuters and transporters within the enclave, and hindered the movement of goods and people.

But the Minister in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM said government is serious about putting the bridges in the best of shapes within the deadline given.

“We want to mitigate the inconveniences that people are going through. So i have directed as the sector Minister, that it’s possible for us to work day and night. That is why we have been able to reduce it to four weeks and I’ll be visiting them; I’m telling you, mark it and you’re Journalist follow me, if by Christmas the work is not done and the road is not opened, I won’t sit in my house to spend Christmas. Myself, my Deputy ministers, Engineers all of us will spend Christmas on that bridge.”
