Assembly to prosecute people who engage in open defecation
The Municipal Chief Executive for the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem(KEEA) municipality of the Central region, Hon. Appiah Korang has defended the decision of the assembly to prosecute people who engage in open defecation.
According to Hon. Appiah Korang, he supports the prosecutorial measure taken by the sanitation department of the assembly as it will not only deter people from defecating in the open but will also help protect the economy of the place.
Hon. Appiah Korang explains that research by some key institutions in the area indicate that the Salt factory has had its demand dwindling as a result of the open defecation in the area with many buyers preferring salt from other relatively clean areas.
The assembly, he says cannot sit idle for people’s livelihood to be destroyed due to the actions of a few people who would want to defecate in the open including the beaches and other salt mining fields thereby scaring away potential buyers of the salt as well as investors who would have loved to do business in the area.
His comments follows accusation by a section of the people in the area who are not happy with the prosecutorial measures adopted by the assembly to end open defecation in the area.
Hon. Appiah Korang stated that the assembly will not end the prosecution as it has proven effective in dealing with the menace.
The latest arrest made involved an assembly member of the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem Municipality who was arrested together with some others this week for engaging in open defecation at the Elmina beach.
The assembly man Clarance Joseph of the Sabre Awene electoral area was arrested by the assembly task force that is enforcing the ban on open defecation.
The arrests according to the assembly shows their uncompromising stance in bringing an abrupt end to the menace and promote a clean environment.
