The timely intervention of hawkers at the Dzorwulu Traffic Light in Accra saved a Benz car from being burnt into ashes on Thursday afternoon at about 2pm.

The hawkers who were briskly doing their business detected smoke from the white Benz car with registration number GN 7000-16 which was coming from the Lapaz direction and heading towards Tetteh Quarshie roundabout and drew the attention of the driver to it.

It was intriguing how the gallant hawkers fought the fire that lasted for about 20 minutes.

While some grabbed fire extinguishers being sold there by their colleagues’ others used sachet water and sand.

Speaking to Oman FM, the hawkers said it took their intervention to save the situation, but quickly added that there are times that “these same private drivers go on radio stations and charge authorities to sack us from the streets.”

“If we were not here the car would have been burnt into ashes,” one of them said.

“They should stop asking authorities to drive us away.”

In an interview with Oman News owner of the car, Mr. Edward Amoaful expressed appreciation to the hawkers for their efforts in saving his car from burning to ashes.

According to him, the car is valued at Gh¢180,000 explaining that the actual cost of the car is $30,000 and that he paid Gh¢50,000 to clear it from the port.

He appealed to the government to find alternative jobs for the hawkers before evicting them.
