The Independence Square was lively with excitement as workers from both public and private companies gathered to commemorate the 2018 May Day celebrations.

Workers were present in their numbers, representing their respective companies, with some spotting branded lacostes and V-neck T-shirts. The ecstatic lot charged up the atmosphere with hot ‘jama’ songs, in unison with music from companies’ brass bands.

Other workers were seen either wearing red armbands or brandishing placards, a move meant to display their disappointment in the Akufo-Addo government, for failing to address issues of poor management policies at workplaces and inappropriate work ethics.

A number of these aggrieved workers, speaking to Ghanaweb, strongly criticized government for the silence on their predicament, charging them to take immediate action.

That notwithstanding, the May Day celebrations climaxed with a spectacular parade by the companies present.

The first day of May is a day set aside to celebrate workers worldwide and appreciate their good works. Also known as International Labour Day in other countries, the day is recognized as a public holiday in most countries.

Main event in Kumasi

The main event took place in Kumasi, with President Akufo-Addo and his Vice, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia gracing the occasion. The President, prior to the parade, took the opportunity to launch the Nation Builders’ Corp which will employ 100,000 graduates who have completed their National Service.
