Great Policy

Why don't we also exempt science, technical and vocational students from English and Social Studies so that with D7 and E8 they can also apply to the universities. It appears there are people in this country who want to impose the arts and Humanities on everybody. If only those doing the arts are considered, the sciences, technical and vocational programmes will be unattractive since people worship degrees in this country and so students will go in for any arts or humanity programme provided they get a degree at the end. A similar problem happened in the nursing profession in Ghana. Ever since those with the arts certificates were allowed into that profession, more people went in for general nursing than specialised nursing. Today, in Ghana, specialised nurses are in short supply but for the general nurses they are more than necessary. What about the GES, initially they made the training colleges run general education which mostly favoured those with General Arts background. Today , there are more arts teachers in that institution than science, vocational and technical instructors combined. In fact in the GES, Arts teachers constitute 95% of their staff population and most JHSs in the country don't even have qualified maths and science teachers. This explains why most students are not able to pass well in these subjects. It is time our leaders take high quality decisions for the general good.
