2022 World Cup qualifying: South Africa must target revenge against Ghana - Ex-Bafana Bafana captain urges
Former South Africa captain, Aaron Mokoena has urged the Bafana Bafana to avenge their last year's AFCON qualifier defeat against Ghana after they were drawn against the West Africa powerhouse in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Bafana Bafana were pitted Ghana, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia in Group G of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in the draw that as conducted on Tuesday.
Ex-captain Mokoena believes the South Africans are set to face an uphill task en route to Qatar due to the strength of their opponents.
The former Blackburn Rovers defender implored his countrymen to use the opportunity to avenge their recent 2-0 loss against Ghana when the two sides square off.
“This is one of the most challenging matches, I can probably say it is the toughest in the group because Ghana is also looking to qualify,” added the 39-year-old.
“They have not been successful in the past in terms of reaching the tournament and the current crop of Ghana faced Bafana recently. We were battered away from home - I think it’s an interesting group.
“Supposedly we have to call it a revenge match against Ghana. We lost to them away and we have to fight for a win. It is a tough draw again but we have the quality and experience to challenge for the number one spot.
“We used to do well against Ghana at home even during my days, but we only need to ensure we avoid a defeat away from home.”
Meanwhile, Bafana last competed in the global showpiece as hosts in 2010, and they failed to book a spot in Brazil 2014 and in Russia two years ago.
