Afful nominated for MLS goal of the week
Ghanaian wing-back Harrison Afful’s goal for Columbus Crew against New York City FC on Saturday has been nominated for goal of the week.
The 32-year-old, who is expected to be on international duties this weekend, scored a spectacular goal to aid his side’s 2-1 comeback win against the New York side.
Afful scored the all-important goal after Tajouri Shradi put the New Yorkers in front when he jumped onto a deflective short inside the penalty box to beat goalkeeper Zack Steffen in the 53rd minute.
The Black and Gold side did not relent, as it didn’t take long for the Ghanaian full-back to draw parity with a screamer.
His first attempt deflected off a defender’s head back to the feet of the diminutive defender, who then unleashed a curling screamer that beat goalkeeper Sean Johnson in post for the New York City FC.
Winger Justin Meram, who was reacquired by Columbus earlier this month, scored the winner off of a corner kick two minutes later to seal victory for Afful and his teammates.
On Monday, September 3, it was announced that the Ghanaian’s goal had been nominated to compete for the Major League Soccer (MLS) goal of the week.
His goal has made him the third highest scorer of his club with two finishes in the season so far and the victory has pulled the Black & Gold within five points off New York FC and a three-point lead over the Philadelphia Union for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.
