Christian Atsu featured as Newcastle suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of the Watford at St. James’ Park in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
The Magpies have not made it past round four since 2006 and with another early exit looming the Ghanaian international was introduced in the 73rd minute for Matt Ritchie with the score at 1-0.
After a goalless first half, Andre Gray put the visiting team in the lead after 61 minutes, and Isaac Success doubled the advantage on 90 minutes to send the Hornets in the round five draws for just the second time in 10 seasons.
Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez shared his thoughts after the game: "Obviously we are disappointed. We made a couple of mistakes and conceded two goals in a game that was even and could have gone either way.
"You have to create chances to score goals. But in this game, you cannot say we were much worse than them. We just have to realise that we cannot go through with this team, it means we have to now concentrate on the league.
