Awal scores late penalty to earn draw for Maritzburg

Ghana defender Mohammed Awal converted a late penalty to ensure Maritzburg United earned a 1-1 draw against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday in the Premier Soccer League opener.

Referee Victor Gomes pointed to the spot after Mame Niang elbowed Mondli Cele in the face when they went to contest for an air ball. Awal held his nerve and slotted home for a share of the spoils at the Loftus Stadium.


Maritzburg had a poor start to the match after they conceded a goal after just one minute.

Mame Niang set up Katlego Mashego to score at the back post from a tight angle.


The Team of Choice had several players including experienced Ghana defender John Pantsil unavailable for the match due to work permit problems.
