The Black Maidens carry forward in Uruguay the baton for women’s football in Ghana. The hosts of the 11th edition of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations are out of the tournament but the juniors are about to face Mexico in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Ghana will playing in their third consecutive quarter-final since coach Evans Adotey took over and he sought to reassure Ghanaians about the outcome.
Adotey said: “Every Ghanaian is expecting Black Maidens to sail through. Should the unexpected happen, I will be under pressure, I am not under pressure my girls and myself are ready for they action tomorrow we hope to appease the fans the fans of Ghana by going through to the next stage.”
However, Mexico coach Monica Vergara may mute the jubilation because, like El Tri, she also wants to write history. She said: “The girls are ready to confront any rivals they have. I have one girl with a yellow card but I can count on all the girls physically to be on the field and show that Mexico is still a strong team."
Vergara also provided an insight into the responsibility of managing the national team.
She said: “Privilege and honour representing Mexico is only pride and passion, it is the only thing they will see whenever someone represents Mexico."
