Christian Atsu scores season opener in Newcastle 2-3 defeat to title hopeful Liverpool

Ghana winger Christian Atsu opened his goal-scoring account for Newcastle United as they suffered a 2-3 defeat at home to Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday.

Defender Virgil Van Dijk gave the visitors the lead with a thumping header 13 minutes into the first half.

The lead lasted only seven minutes as the Ghanaian tormentor restored parity with a close range shot following a rebound.

Egyptian Mohammed Salah whoever, powered the visitors to a 2-1 lead before the break.

Liverpool’s title chase were halted and thrown into a state of shock when Solomon Rondon scored a fine goal to draw the hosts level.

However, Newcastle failed to utilized their chances as the Liverpool grabbed a late winner through substitute Divock Origi four minutes from time as they walked away with all the three points.

Atsu’s goal is his first for Newcastle with one game left to bring the season to a close.
